Periodontics
Periodontics is the specialist dental field aimed at treating gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. Gum disease, as the name suggests, occurs in the gums surrounding your teeth. It is caused by the colourless bacteria known as plaque which builds up on your teeth and attacks your gum tissue. Gum disease poses a serious health risk if left untreated and has been linked to more serious health problems such as heart disease and stroke. It is the number cause of tooth loss in adults and is very common oral health ailment. In the milder form of the disease called gingivitis, the bacteria attack the gum tissue surrounding your teeth. As the disease progresses the bacteria forms pockets under your gums and slowly penetrates deeper into the gum tissue. Symptoms of gingivitis include red, swollen, receeding gums and bleeding during brushing. If the disease is not treated at this stage it can progress into periodontitis, a severe form of gum disease in which the bacteria also attacks the surrounding bone structure and ligaments. If not treated in a timely manner, bone structure can be eroded and teeth lost.
